that day…

You asked if I heard them
and I said no, who?
most days you would explain
but that day you smiled
and began to cry so
I asked what’s wrong?
but you were silent
as you walked out the door
without jacket or shoes
like some child piped
away at noontide.
You came back that evening
yet it really wasn’t you
at least not the you I know
so well but a you I’m not
sure I like so much
a you that doesn’t explain
everything to me anymore.

I‘ve asked you what happened
that day and you always say
what day? then smile and pine
oh, the day the rocks cried out.

Deeply felt: I especially like the piped away child– very unique, stirring image. We all make ourselves so vulnerable when we try to love…xxxj

    Quietly haunting.

I especially like how the question has been transferred from one speaker to the other. That really captures the complicated dance of relationship (which sometimes feels like no dance at all).

      L.L., ah the dance…’complicated’ = ‘woven together’…

sometimes people don’t hear the same things. why does one person receive and the other does not? now, that is truly a mystery.

Great pay off line. I’m going to carry this one around a bit.
