Enough

I sincerely believe the road to hell
is paved, but not with adverbs.
No, quite likely its paved with fallen
sparrows no one paused to grieve.

By not numbering our days we show
contempt, fouling God’s favorite nest.
Our spiritual greed knavishly renders
life a kind of linear nightmare:

we acquire, move on, and acquire more.
We rarely sniff out the character of the
world, whereby we might gain wisdom
and live a life that’s interesting enough.

Ah, yes! God’s “accounting”of eels so foreign to us much of the time. I would like to see you expand more on “Our spiritual greed knavishly renders life a kind of linear nightmare.” Perhaps in a future blog?

I am familiar with this spiritual greed, sad to say. And the whole linear nightmare thing? Yeah, that too. Praying that I’ll pay increasing attention to the sparrows as they fall and give myself over to sniffing. Thanks, John, for always bringing things back to center.

Somehow, this was comforting today. Sometimes I’m afraid that if I keep telling you “good work,” it will somehow begin to lose it’s meaning. So instead, I’ll just raise a glass on this side of the screen.
