Just A Thought

Here’s a thought to try for size.
If prayer is a word path, as Harrison said,
to become less lost, then it feels true to me
to say that prayer is poetry, which is moving
wild laughter, as Whitman said, in the throat of death.
I know, sorta thick.
Sure, take a breath, no hurry.
Ready?
So, when the disciples said ‘Lord, teach us to pray’
their unspoken desire was ‘We wanna be poets.’
Now, if there’s a smidgen of truth there,
and woe to a life with no smidgens,
then what the Lord showcased in response was
nothing less than a hermeneutic of hilarity:
Arthur Murray dance steps
to learn
while laughing
and spinning
and chuckling ‘hey death, up yours.’
Yeah, its just a thought.

Years ago, I had wonderful friends in arts ministries and the woman taught a powerful course in “Jesus as Poet.” I’ve never thought of the NT in the same way since. Thanks for this, John. And congrats on the DSC gig – looking forward to your contributions there.

Just read this to my husband and you made us both chuckle tonight. I think if he followed your logic and poetry, it just may help him understand me a bit more. Woe to the life without smidgens. Thanks John! = )
