Wise Men

The Magi placed gold, frankincense, and
myrrh at the feet of the mother and child.
Scripture says they did not linger but left
having witnessed Bethlehem’s best hope.
The next evening three others came, not
kings or astronomers, but common men.
They arrived when everyone save Joseph
was asleep. They too brought gifts but
theirs was a mysterious tribute of tears,
blood, and sin. Only the oldest of the men
dared speech: These are the costs of living.

You rarely hear of the commoner’s visit
for two reasons. First, scholars consider
it apocryphal. Second, Joseph kept their
offerings and pondered them in his heart.

I love your writings…. read them often. But I am puzzled about this one. Would you mind explaining the 3 common men who came the “next night”?

La Vonne, thank you so much for reading. This one is imaginative. I’ve often wondered if there might have been other visitors who didn’t make it into the scriptural telling, and these three ‘common’ men are what came to mind today. Their gifts are not quite so grand, but they felt just as true. I do hope that makes a little sense.
