The Wonder

The word Advent always causes me to think of
the word adventure. Our round wreaths of green
bordered with pink and purple candles seem to fall
short of this spirit because what men call adventure
usually consists of the stoical endurance of appalling
daily misery. I do believe that’s the voyage little Mary
and big Joseph took so long ago now, an extended season
of deprivation not to go round and light candles but to
gird themselves and lean straight into an unforgiving
wind, to just keep going, to endure the wonder.

This is beautiful, John! I’ve been writing this morning, capturing my own truth from the springboard of your words: “to endure the wonder.” Thank you!

“lean straight into an unforgiving/ wind” Now that is some good advice.

    Wonderful!
We’ve been leaning into an unforgiving wind here these last few months. Some say they certainly understand if we may not be in the Christmas spirit this year. Quite the contrary! I feel more in the true spirit of it now than ever, carrying nothing but hopeful expectation, seeking nothing but to know the truth of “emmanuel,” God with us.

Thank you, Marilyn. May you truly feel that presence these days.
