At Least One

There must be at least one
on this earth who preserves
the idea, one impractical fool
who will not bend the knee but
chooses to turn the cheek.

There must be at least one
on this bruised plain who wears
the look of rightness, a long-sufferer
who knows the wounds men make
do not quickly heal.

There must be at least one
in this shadowed valley
who will cede life for a friend,
a willed renunciator of
the present in favor of a future.

There must be at least one
with no commercial value,
whose very life reminds us of our
lovely and terrible birthright,
one who longs for the appearing.

John, this is fresh water pouring. How timely for me as I recall a conversation I had with my father yesterday where we talked much about what we’re all carrying and if we carry others more than the rest.

Rachel, I’m thankful the words appeared at a good time. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about the ‘carrying’…
