Still

I don’t know that my prayers amount
to a hill of beans. Still, I pray.
I often feel our prayers are
fingers in the dike. If we pulled them out
we might all be swept away.
That’s folklore theology
but I feel that way sometimes.
I’ve heard people say
prayer didn’t change things but it changed me.
Its funny, but they always have that
hurt look in their eyes.
I’m not sure anything changes us, expect pain.
So maybe their eyes makes sense.
Still, its hard to pull that finger out,
even in spite of the long night, and the cold.
It just is.

Yeah, it is. I think folklore theology runs through just about everything we say we believe. It just does. And yes, still – I keep those fingers in place.
