Season

The courtyard resembled a baseball diamond
with a regal fountain at home plate. The man
and his dog strode onto the field to play. No one
else was there that early, just the man and his dog.
Actually the grass was there too, manicured in
straight diagonals, not pretentious but clean.
As the man threw the ball far the dog ran for his
life and retrieved it every time. The grass that was
there too looked happy to have such play going on.
The grass would give as the dog ran, then gently
return, like the dog, ready for the next pitch. It
was a game of retrievals – first by this golden dog,
then by the greener grass. The man eventually tired
but the dog and the grass longed to play longer.

Grass has a way of wearing a man out at times.
