Christmas On

In the face of seasoned waves of evil
that we would sing that old noel,
that we would hang lights on branches,
that we would give gifts to others
even if that gift is only ourselves –
this, this is a defiance seemingly impotent
against the principalities and powers who
daily conspire to convince us that
we are alone and love is a lie.
But do not be deceived for the demons themselves
tremble at such quaintness.
Sisters and brothers, Christmas on.

I really like this because we forget that Christmas commemorates warfare in the heavenlies. Maybe Luke 2 ought to be read alongside Revelation 12 (with Matthew’s account of Herod’s bloodbath) every Christmas Eve.

Preach it. This brought me to tears that I could not even release. The news of this world brings a toughening. The poets of our world can bring the softening back to the callous places. Thank you.

This is so rich, John. It made me say aloud, Oh, you feel it, too? I thought I was the only one.

“Sisters and brothers, Christmas on.” Thank you for this greeting and may it be true for you and yours!

John, what a positively defiant (in the very best way) and powerful poem. Wow.

Amen and amen! Keep preaching it. The only thing that exposes the truth of darkness is the greater truth of light.

I have dressed this up just a little (font wise), printed it on a beautiful piece of paper, framed it and am personally taking this to my oldest and dearest friend tonight who has just become a Christian and it’s her birthday. This goes beyond thank you words, John. <3

[…] Christmas on – John Blase, on the beautiful due. Sometimes poetry penetrates my heart in a way that prose doesn’t. […]
