For Our Own Good

Time passes so quickly we forget
the extravagance of loss until something plain
stands in our way to say Remember.
Opening the refrigerator to see a jar of olives,
that treat your father loved to snack on.
Standing in the checkout line as
the overhead speaker plays Love Is Blue,
that tune your mother swayed to
as she did the dishes at night.
Such somethings find their way into our
distracted days for our own good,
so we might not forget what we mean – to be loving.

Lovely; so true. It’s those little things that are so painful, yet so sweet, too.

This moved me to tears, as it brought to mind my own mom and dad, now gone. This was a good thing, though. Thank you.
