Than We Knew

It was a world sweeter than we knew.
Back then. Back when
we tried to soothe babies to sleep in that
rocking-chair built just like JFK’s.

We were half-dead most days
until we discovered the Exer-Saucer and
Winnie the Pooh on VHS.
Bouncing to that bear’s untamed cheer

kept them glued while you and I napped
or unforgot the pleasures of the flesh,
or some days both. We had to be
quick though. So we quicked.

It was a world we thought would never end.
Back then. Back when.
And then it did.
All those living-in-the-moment

sermons are for suckers. We live
moment-to-moment, each measuring
another acre in the wood,
a wood sweeter than we knew.

I love this. I’ve lived this. And now as grandchildren leave, it’s not easier…

ummm. yes. with a lump in my throat, I concur. 2nd little started university last week. last 2 littles began 6th grade. first one is graduating university AND getting married next spring, and the one in the middle is now driving (well, sort of. learner’s permit driving…). We no longer have Friday folders to check, sign, send back. 17 years of elementary school, now complete. it is such joy to get the pleasure of bearing witness to their first flights; also to not have to be quite so quick with each other. and while neither of us fear the empty nest knowing we will be more than able to happily occupy our time with each other, this momma’s heart aches, just a little…

Blinking back tears. This so resonates with me, as do the comments. Thank you.
