a trader’s life…

Immediately the one who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and gained five more talents. In the same manner the one who had received the two talents gained two more. But he who received the one talent went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money. – Matthew 25.16-18

How is a talent different from a gift? Why did she get five while he got one? What’s a surefire way to double God’s investment? You can ask those kinds of questions if you want to (yawn)…Lord knows enough preachers and teachers have. But the question with the blood in it, which is the one you always want, is: are you willing to show up and trade?

Are you willing to bring your thoughts, ideas, hunches, opinions, your entire past and present, your mistakes, successes, hopes, dreams, shame, glory, your height, weight, eye color, skin tone, shoe size, bust size, political affiliation, music preferences, your love, lust, steadfastness, envy, forgiveness, your mercy, compassion, justice, your KJV, NIV, NASB, Message, your Facebook, Twitter, phone call, handwritten letter…are you willing to bring all you are to all this day offers and trade/give and take/cut a deal/spit’n’shake/pay someone today so they’ll gladly repay you Friday/make an offer/roll the dice/take a chance/go for broke/shoot for the moon/swing for the fence?

If you’re willing to trade, its a gain, hands down. If not, its a loss…for all of us.

I’ve just recently become of follower of your blog and I’m not a person who comments much. But this post was such a unique twist on the parable of the talents, I just had to write! Such an great angle! I’m definitely going to be pondering this for awhile… and probably speaking about it myself! Thanks for the Deep Thoughts. You’re a regular Jack Handy! 😉

“The question with the blood in it”, indeed. Keep being drawn back and back through your posts; and even after the drawing, when I read those opening questions my mind raced ahead to the inscrutable answers that my pew-glued-arse youth lead me to assume was inevitably following. And then you drew the blood to the surface and pricked the skin and let it run free.

I’m here. Sometimes I only bring drops of blood to trade. But I’m here. Thanks for all this.
