consider: the hero

Just before dark the last foundation was
destroyed and the righteous wrung their
little hands oh what in heaven shall we do?
Embarrassing really, all those frantic carolers
with cold hymnals unable to remember the
tunes. I decided to get a haircut, hell why
not, so I sat and waited among mismatched
chairs while old men talked Korea and girlie
magazines throbbed on the waiting table.
Alright sport, you’re next. The green vinyl
Koch, his talcy hands, a paper-thin collar,
and finally the white cape snapped snug.
Okay, what’ll it be, little off all over, clean
up the ears and neck, keep a bita sideburn?
No sir, its dark by now, just shave it all off.
Wars and rumor of wars came to a halt. You
sure, sport? Yessir, its time to start anew.

As I stood to pay he waved no, this one’s on
the house. One of the vets started whistling
that Whittaker song about a new world in the
morning. I grabbed a handful of magazines
on my way out and considered turning to
salute their saggy eyelids, but I did not.

I could never say I understand every word you write..though I long to. But when I do I’m left with a picture for my thoughts and living grows more dear, less frightening…and it makes me want see more. You really have a gift..thanks for sharing it.

I’d like to have been a fly on the wall for this one.
(Shelly, I think you speak so beautifully for all of us who find comfort here.)
