grass roots revival…

No one noticed it at first. But then a young
weatherman mentioned it off-the-cuff and
now its all the buzz: the rainbows are all
gone. Experts have tracked rains globally
for months now and not a single after-
the-storm trace of the colors in the sky.
The saved are curious but unruffled,
taking it in stride, proclaiming it all
old-testament-pre-resurrection anyway.
But what’s surprising is the reaction of
the sinners, those usually labeled as not
giving a hill of beans about God. They’ve
scoured old bookstores for used copies of
the good book and they’ve called town
meetings to reread aloud the old story.
They now seem convinced the promise
no longer holds, that the levees of mercy
are breached and judgment’s rising.
They’ve taken to primitive forms of gathering,
what old-timers are saying reminds them
of something folks used to do beneath steeples.
Its quite tender actually, how the unfaithful now
assemble once a week in public parks to sit
quietly and hope, with eyes fixed on the skies.
