The Arms of Men
from the arms of men in shirt sleeves gumptioned by belted trousers and hickory stripe overalls. i came from men not reckless but brave, not mean but proud, men who did some good just by being a man – like the man in the middle (my grandfather) and the boy to his left (my father). i came from men who knew the sun’s agonna shine and wind’s agonna blow, and in their strength held their fabulous memories of earth high and close.
Peering into an old photograph and looking for a poem in it, man I love doing that. Such a thing would make a truly memorable gift for Christmas, huh? So here’s an offer – you send me an image of an old photo along with any information/thoughts I’d need to know about who/what the image represents, I’ll sit with, peer into it, then craft a poem for you. I’ll send the poem back then you can print it, mat it, re-font it, frame it, enlarge it, put it on a t-shirt, whatever, and surprise a family member or friend this holiday season with something that stirs memory. If you’ve spent any time around here then you know my style, and most of the poetry is concise; yours would be as well. Cost? $50. Interested? Leave me a comment with a way to contact you, or message me via FB, and we’ll go from there. Of course the swellest thing would be that you find an old photo and write a poem yourself.
I love old photos, too. Just framed a bunch of old family black and whites and put them in my living room. I did write a poem about one of them already…..have to share it with you sometime! Thanks for the inspiration!
Lisa, I’m glad you’re writing some poetry!
I’ve got one for you! I’ll send it to you as a facebook mail if that works. Exciting. My sister and my dad are going to love this!
Alright, Kari, I’ve been mulling on it a coupla days now…
Pure D genius.
Amber, that’s actually my rap name – Pure D.
John, great idea but what you wrote, wow. Its what I have longed to be but didn’t know how. I have never know what it’s like to be one of those men, as you described them, was never given the opportunity, and was afraid to take it for myself. Thanks for providing a little point of inspiration at this late stage of my life.
Bob
Thank you, Bob.
