Anthem
– for Sarah
she’s reading rand’s anthem,
further finding the unspeakable word – “I”,
further finding a girl must be free not only from
her brother but also to some degree from
sister and mother and father,
further finding the dreamer’s path
where one must be unafraid of uncharted forests
and the finery of unmentionable times,
further finding a name beyond her number,
finding light and life and so much more.
as one born curious and quick she will be
hunted on this earth but what the many intend
for harm the One intends for good
to preserve not only her but us alive.
*My 9th grade daughter is currently reading Ayn Rand’s Anthem for English class. I know some have difficulty with Rand’s philosophy, then again some have difficulty with a lot of things.
I have been enchanted with your poems for a little while now. I just have to say about this one–while many do detest Any Rand’s philosophy, and I definitely don’t agree with much of it, I have been so moved and inspired by her books. You have captured the inspiration in her words perfectly.
Monique, thanks for taking the time to write. Yes, I don’t agree with much of it either but there are pieces that ring true. Thanks again.
I came because of “A Deeper Church,” and I’m glad I did.
Thank you, Barbara.
