Colorado Christmas Eve

The Broncos are playing like men possessed
of a great joy. Still, the pall hangs dank over
Sandy Hook. The weather prophets predict a
white Christmas, the first since the early 80s.
Social media remains a brothel and we’re all
paying customers. My children decorated a
gingerbread house last night all by themselves
while my wife and I wept as the Captain sang
Edelweiss. People are talking about their guns
and the fiscal cliff; in my junkyard mind I see
Butch and Sundance making that fool’s jump.
Purists are also talking about chopping at the
root cause of it all, cautioning us to resist any
temporary measures. I understand, but I also
know that band-aids are miraculous, keeping
the blood from staining your clothes while also
protecting wounds as they heal. Later tonight
we will stand shoulder to shoulder with other
lukewarm believers, our faces lit by tiny white
candles as we once more sing the light into the
world. God, please bless our homeland forever.
