John 3:16-17

Once upon a time there was a love
of this only begotten world so fierce it
caused the uncaused Cause to willfully
stumble and sputter then draw and fall
on his sword. An act of theocide. Why?
So that the world might spin scott free –
so lilacs could keep bursting in June and
feuding husbands and wives might kiss
and make up as children dream beneath
Orion and Pleiades and Sirius the dog star.

This made tears spring to my eyes. The macro and the micro in one glance. It’s almost too much to take in without bursting.

i have not ever thought of “upon a time” very much. i usually always think of “in time” or “was a time.” but, upon? it really is pretty cool.
