Some Magic

She was wild back then, wild
like sage. He sat behind her in
Latin class and never felt more
alive learning a dead language.
She had a button nose, just like
that line from the Frosty song.
And that’s who she was to him,
this christmas creature who’d
march in tardy every day only
to melt into the desk before him.
She’d turn and parse his heart:
‘can I borrow your homework?’
He’d gladly hand it over while
praying ‘amo, amas, amamus.’

Just had my 4th year latin student/daughter read this… (she’s one of three girls in a class of 28 guys.) She giggled and said “who wrote this, Mom?” as though she was sure she knew the author. Hmmmm. = /
