Good Company

There is something everlasting
in those classic westerns
when the cowboy kisses the
lady near the bend in the river
where the cottonwoods grow.
For that scene she reins in her
power to make room for him,
so he can taste the ambrosial
wind on her mouth and feel
the pulse of the whole world.
In that kiss he realizes she is
good company to keep, that
by her side he might transcend
the genre’s fence to grow into
a man who loved too much.
