Then Again
The wind blew over a brief section of our
fence last night, a section we share with
neighbors we wave to but that’s about it.
This could be a sign from God to tear down
the walls that divide us as next-doorians
and open ourselves up to deeper hospitality.
Then again it may simply be what happens
when 75mph winds roar down the foothills
and make contact with cheap wood fencing.
Either way the section is down. It will have
to be repaired. This will involve negotiating
with our neighbors and splitting the costs
which could be a metaphor for how we all
need each other to get things accomplished.
Or it could just be what you have to do to
get your fence fixed in the world God chose
to fill with Februarys and winds and wooden
fences and neighbors its best to wave to even
if that’s about it and maybe always will be.
There is what we see. Then there is the wind.
And, of course, there are also dogs who dig under fences…
That last line is a keeper.
So, you tell a small story. And then you point us to the cosmic. Neatly done. Thank you.
And “something there is that doesn’t love a wall”. (I’m a new reader and thankful to have found your words!)
Yes. Why must everything be a bid deal. Sometimes it just happens.
