Such Promise

Jesus? Sure I remember him.
He was different. He moved
in here and became one of us.
He drank at our weddings and
cried at our funerals. He didn’t
just look at life, window-shop.
No, he watched. And he learned
the nuances. That takes heart.
If you were a loser you might as
well have had God on your side.
If you were a winner, well, let’s
say it paid to keep one eye open.
And everything was fine until he
started the crazy talk and magic.
You heard who he claimed to be?
Its a shame, he had such promise.
What happened? Nobody knows.
But sometimes life is like that,
years unfurl and a man gets lost.
God knows we tried to save him.

Most of us are still trying to save him, I think. This line right here, is basically my highest hopes for myself:
“No, he watched. And he learned
    the nuances.”

Well crap, man. Aren’t we SUPPOSED to save him? Now, wait a sec — guess I got that backward for a minute. Yeah. Definitely got that wrong. Sigh.

Oh, these words sound so familiar, John. You do have a way with a mirror…

I hope so hard that you will publish an anthology of your archives. I’d be first in line for it.

Wow John. This beautiful and stinging all at the same time. Thank you for the glimpse into my own heart.
