If For Only Today
I’ll give you my romance
when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.
Until then I’ll continue to be swept away
by the existence of tacos
and the drip of summer rain from the downspout
and the fact that Robert Wells wrote the words
while Jack Segal wrote the tune then
Tony Bennett took both and sang
When Joanna Loved Me.
Then there’s that moment you see someone you love,
someone you haven’t seen for too long now, and
the happiness you feel hurts, causing you to choke
and swear you’ll visit more often.
Yes, if I were to write of all the romance
in this life even the world itself could not contain all those books.
But I have poemed this much in the hope
that you might pause and if for only today, believe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d-2JaK-CHM

I believe, I believe.
