I'm Afraid of Dying

Are you ever afraid of dying?
I’m not talking about
the dying that will deposit you
directly into the Lord’s presence (as some hold).
But the dying that will tear
you from the fabric of here,
here where you’ve seen wonders.
I don’t believe I’ve ever told you I fear
that second kind of dying. But I do.
I’m telling you now because I’ve recently
seen how life changes in an ordinary instant,
reminds us we live in a game of gossip,
whispering our stories to the next in line.
We die. Then we’re passed along in
another’s tongue, and I’m afraid they’ll
edit a crucial detail.

John, Sobering thoughts here! As we get older (I’m 64), we come closer to facing our own mortality. Last winter I went into the hospital for 4 days – nearly died from pneumonia. That was a sobering wakeup call. I do think I understand what you’re saying here, about two types of dying. Last year I sent you a link to a blog written by a mom of a little girl who’s been battling cancer for about 4 years. She and her girls are on the membership rolls of our church in Bozeman, Trinity PCA, although I’ve never met them in person. (I don’t know about the husband/dad, Sten Anderson). Jai Anderson’s missives are heartfelt, heart-wrenching, yet full of hope. Her writing reminds me a bit of Ann Voskamp’s, infused with thoughts of C.S. Lewis and Tolkein. Last week her daughter, Alistaire, came home from the Seattle hospital for her last days in hospice at home. Today’s post was beautiful, gut-wrenching, but hopeful in the resurrection and the restoration of all things. If you can read it without shedding a tear, you’re a tougher man than me! But from reading your posts, I doubt you’re stony-hearted! My wife, (a published author under her former name of Kathy Tyers) and I both think Jai’s blogs should be edited and published in book form. Since you walked a similar tough road with Kara Tippetts, see what you think. Here’s the link to the latest post:Call Me Sapphire | | | | | |
